I understand maybe not stepping in against the aliens. But. Stepping in to save him. He didn't have to die, Doctor. Why couldn't you have at least been around to help me save him?

Because it's really not that simple. I'm sorry, but it's not. With events like this, me going in to stop one thing in the scenario just starts off a chain reaction, as soon as I'd gone in there I would have been part of the events there and history itself would have been changed. Do you really think that I wanted Ianto to die in all of that?
