'Thank you for meeting me on such short notice, Doctor.'
The ice in the inspector's tone foretold the unpleasantness Watson would find concealed beneath the discarded carpet beside the tracks.
'Not at all, Inspector, but wouldn’t Mr Holmes be better suited for this work?’
‘That’s arguable. In any case, he’s occupied elsewhere.’
Dr Watson began his examination.
‘I count no less than thirteen separate stab wounds-’
‘-And the green flecks under his fingernails?’
‘Paint chips. He tried to claw his way out of somewhere or something. Poor little blighter. This much is certain: the train didn’t kill him.’
