Having been a party host...

A lot of conventions have been taking parties for granted.

It's worth throwing a little convention budget at doorstops, tub liners (shower curtains), ice, ID wristbands, sign kiosks and other little things that make party logistics easier.

It's worth negotiating a good area of the hotel for parties. This is a difficult decision to make, there are a lot of conflicting factors in what makes a good party floor. Of course some hotels just don't have a good party floor in the first place.

It's worth thanking party hosts who are responsible for doing a good job, and inviting them back.

Having been on a couple of panels with Kim Newman, I can say that he's an impressive scholar and critic, with a knowledge of the history of fantastic literature that compares to mine as a welding torch compares to a candle. I'm sorry I don't enjoy his writing more; pastiche isn't my favorite genre.
