Lazlo has managed to get himself up and dressed at a decent hour, and is coming down the steps from the direction of the inn, stifling a yawn behind his hand. "Good morning!" he calls out, seeing Subala down at the shore. "Oh, you found a craft? Great! I didn't know if we were going to have to politely ask the admiral to borrow one of his ship's lifeboats."
"Mornin'!" Subala nods. "Yeah, looks like the castle got a few of these for travelin' on the lake, but they don't look like they've been used in a real long time. This was the one in the best shape; I'm makin' sure it'll hold us. What do you think?"
She steps back and waves at him to take a look. She takes a sip from her mug, which reminds her... "Oh! Don't know if you like it, but I made you some tea." She points at the other mug on the rock.
"Hm? Oh! Sure, in a minute." Lazlo needs to look over the boat, first, energized by having the chance to finally make use of his expertise. "Hmm...there are no cracks that I can see, and the pitch seems to be holding. If it's been in storage, it's been in the right place." He runs his hands along the keel, eyeing it keenly. "I think she'll do just fine for fishing."
Once done, he steps over and takes the other mug, nodding his thanks to Subala before taking a sip.
The tea she's brewed is an unsweetened black tea; it's steeped for a little while so it's quite strong to the point of being overly tannin-y, but it's got a decent flavor and certainly helps keep the eyes open.
She drains her mug. "All right, then! No point in wastin' time, then. Shall we get a move on?"
She half-kneels to get her hands on one side of the dory, preparing to flip it over. "If you can help me flip it back over..."
Subala answers briefly to the people Lazlo lists. She shakes her head at Jewel--she hasn't met her, nor Sigurd.
"Hervey? Ain't met him but Miss Eileen said he'd gone to Vinay del Zexay and suggested I might ask him to show me around. But wait... did you say he was a pirate?!" She looks alarmed, hoping she heard Lazlo wrong, seeing as her own experience with pirates involved the kind who try to steal one's cargo, one's ship, and one's cabin boys.
She pauses from the conversation as Lazlo pulls in the trout. "That's it... you got him!"
She looks to the chunk of rust in her hand. She shakes it slightly to continue to get out the water and goop, and it rattles.
Lazlo hadn't heard that, about Hervey. "Oh? Oh, I see. Well, I'm sure you'll meet them eventually. Hervey is kind of loud, he's hard to miss when he's here." He smiles comfortably, thinking about the pirates. "Yeah, he and Sigurd, and their captain Kika - she's probably holed up on board the Grishend." He points to the low-riding ship parked next the much larger Lino in the harbor. "They're actually wonderful people. Until I met them, I was just as afraid of pirates as anyone, but they were actually very honorable people."
Lazlo takes a moment to land the trout and unhook it, and then tosses it into the pail. "That's a good-sized one, it'll make a nice lunch." The rattle catches his attention, making him look up curiously. "Hm. Some kind of hidden treasure in there?"
She looks up at the ship Lazlo points to and gives it an appraising nod. "She's a pretty thing, at least." She considers what he says. "Well, if they helped you and the King of Obel in that war, I s'pose they're more like privateers. That's okay then." She nods, figuring Lazlo wouldn't ally himself with more unsavory sorts anyway. "Loud, is he? Then he'n me should get along great." She grins.
She shakes the object again; it does look to be some kind of gauntlet, obviously long destroyed by being in the water. "Probably just some rocks or somethin'." She takes out a small knife and tries to pry apart the rusted metal. A gleam of silver falls into her hand. It's a simple ring, worn and old, but obviously actually silver since it's not corroded. "Huh. Look at that. Pretty little thing. Whatever wore it musta rotted away a long time ago, poor fella." She holds it out to Lazlo to see.
She adds cheekily, "S'not big enough for lunch, though."
Lazlo has no idea how pirates evolved in the Islands in more recent times, or else he might not have been so blithe about introducing his friends as pirates. To him, they're just friends he relied upon and is proud of now. "Yeah, they helped a lot. Kika's ship was in our fleet and sank more than her share of Kooluk vessels."
He blinks in wonder at the treasure revealed inside the rusted gauntlet. "Wow. Look at that...the waters have hardly touched it." He then grins. "I guess, like any good treasure, finders-keepers? Congratulations. I bet it would buy a hundred lunches."
"Oh? Like who?" Subala slows her rowing and twists the oars, letting the boat calm its movement into a lazy drift.
She smiles back at him. "Thanks!" She says brightly, always wanting to feel useful. "I hope so. Some folks seemed to want a contest, so seems like there should be enough for all. I haven't made a rod like that in a real long time though. Guy named Logg taught me how."
"Hmm..." Which story to tell first? "Well, all of the pirates we sailed with were funny, except Kika and Sigurd - they were more serious. But there was this young boy, Nalleo, he could out-climb anyone on the rigging. Oh! And Wendel and Nico - they were always running around making trouble. Nico was our lookout, he was good at it."
Lazlo nods enthusiastically. "I like the idea of a contest. I don't know if I'll win, but I'll sure try. So...who's Logg, then?"
"Sounds like a good crew. Don't know what it is about topsmen that makes them good troublemakers. Maybe they just look down on everyone else." Subala laughs at her own horrible joke. "These all with Kika, or folks you picked up at other ports
( ... )
Fortunately, Lazlo is not immune to lame jokes, and laughs. "That's a good one. Ah...no, actually. Nico was native to Obel, the king hired him. I did pick up a lot of the crew from other places, though - pretty much every Island. Even Iluya, though there wasn't much left of it at the time."
He smiles warmly at her description. "He sounds like a neat person. It would be nice to meet him." Now that the boat has drifted into position, he flicks his line into the water again, eager to see what else they can catch.
