Steve/Bucky- WWII romance trope, possible AU mwildsides November 8 2011, 08:20:47 UTC

I'm a big fan of war romance, and I'm listening to the Atonement soundtrack when this struck me. I mean they do fight in the war after all....anyway!

I'd like to see a lot of angst, for one, and there are a few possibilities. One could be that, while Bucky is overseas and Steve is still in basic training, they exchange letters, and try to be discreet about their relationship, meanwhile Bucky tells Steve about the horrors of war, and how miserable everything is at the front.

OR you could go AU where either Bucky or cap is the one overseas, no Captain America stuff, and still there are letters and just really generic war romance, if you catch my drift? If one of them dies, too, that would be. Fitting.

I just want more war angst from these two. and more of these two in general, but.

YESSS. I think a fic made up of letters exchange would work great in this fandom.

Dear Steve,

Sorry I didn't write sooner. Tonight is the first real chance I've had to write a letter, since I didn't pass out after dinner for once.

Basic is hell and I want to come home so bad I can taste it. I miss you, I miss our shitty apartment, and I miss Brooklyn. Hell, I even miss the upstairs neighbor and his showtunes at three in the morning! Bugles are the worst possible way to wake up and the food is terrible. I'll take your culinary misadventures with rations anytime over the slop they call food. And worst of all, the beds are cold and empty. Guess I got too used to waking up to beautiful blonds in the morning, huh? They have us training and doing drills all day, every day, except Sundays (what's this thing you call a "weekend"?). It's all crawling under barbed wire through the mud, running with heavy packs, endless pushups and way too much ( ... )

Thanks! :D But the idea I have is too perfect to ignore. It'll be all the angst you can stand.

I promise I'll include an epilogue though, which will be much happier (so I guess this is now one of seven, hm?).

A/n: I should note that I'm using actual war letters as references for what Buck and Steve would be experiencing (found in War Letters: Extraordinary Correspondence from American Wars edited by Andrew Carroll, which is pretty amazing). Each part is intended to to stand on its own as a piece in the chronology, too, so there's been a couple letters between them now since the first part ( ... )
