Firstly, I would like to say that I listen to a LOT of mopey-ass music. This has everything to do with my iPod, which I acquired in 2003... but filled to the brim with depressing music in 2004 when my life was completely lame. I was an asshole, I sort of fell in love with this girl, I was living at home with my parents... and I was listening to a LOT of "Woe is me!" stuff.
Now, we're currently in 2010. Life is good! Amazing wife, two kids, job I love, friends and family, yadda yadda yadda... but I'm still using that '03 iPod and it's still full of blah.
Nothing really makes me cry musically, but this one always makes me sad.
There's probably a lot of people for whom Randy Newman can be boiled down to that (admittedly funny) Family Guy joke where he sings the song about picking an apple from a tree, but I've always sincerely loved the guy. He doesn't go for the easy rhyme, he's got this thick voice and tons of emotion in there. I mean, he did Jessie's Song from Toy Story 2, f'r Pete's sake! Another hanky-worthy song!
At the time it was in heavy rotation on my iPod, Feels Like Home made me feel sad because I genuinely felt like I was never going to feel like I was at home with someone ever again. Thankfully this was not the case.
