The clay stuff that companies make traditional kitty litter out of isn't a renewable resource and in fact, some of the materials are obtained through strip-mining. We used a wheat-based kitty litter which is (supposedly) more Earth friendly.

If it's just the litter itself that's the problem, then what does it matter if you throw it in the terlit or the trash, as long as you buy the flushable litter? And could you scoop into some kind of intermediate container, and then just dump the whole thing in the trash? Or is that part of the song and dance?
