It never surprised Jean how willing all of her loved ones were to look back, even after she had stayed behind, and make her feel as welcomed as she could be into their lives. They kept moving forward, it seemed, while she had been on an entirely different plane of existence. She'd shift -- get jerked back and forth, and a part of her, though faintly and distantly grateful that the people around her had patience and unconditional forgiveness, was still terrified of losing her place in their lives ( ... )

It was weird not to feel her in his head first, before she spoke up. It had been such a long time since he'd been around Jean and she wasn't a constant presence in his mind. Even when they had been on the outs, she had been there in his mind.

"Well, we didn't exactly set a time," he said, smiling up at her and gesturing for her to take a seat.

If he hadn't been gradually numbed to the site of Jean, or at least versions of her, over the last few months, it would be harder to see her. As it was there was just a sense of oddness about it all, although he wondered if that would change the more he talked to her and the more she began to feel like his Jean.

A nervous exhalation converted into a small, short laugh. "Yeah, that's true." The redhead bit her lip anxiously, trying to fight off the need to inappropriately ponder upon the complexities of time and space at a moment like this. Why, just a few hours ago, she was saying what she felt would be, perhaps, her final goodbye to him, and asking to look into his eyes one last time.

That memory, longing to be snapped shut as easily as it was pried open, loomed over Jean's presence, and she suddenly felt as if it were haunting this very interaction, teasing her.

She thought about what Emma had said about she and Scott having children. About Scott changing.

There was a slight disappointment in herself as she found that she had to fight a myriad of what she saw as feelings of possessiveness that she was no longer entitled to at all.

All she could do was just be. It was her job to help Scott in any way she could -- as a friend, as a partner, a colleague... everything but what he had decided she couldn't really give him ( ... )

Scott could feel the awkwardness coming from Jean, he didn't need to have a telepathic link with her to read that. She was unsure about everything, and he couldn't really blame her. There were some things he was unsure about himself, and he had done this before. Scott had a purpose, position, and direction in life. Jean didn't have any of those things and the thing that was usually her anchor, him, was gone. Or if not gone, drastically changed.

"It's not out of my way," he said, shaking his head. "But even if it was, I'd still have done it."

That much was true. Scott may not have the same feelings for Jean that he once had, but she was still a friend. Still an X-Man. Still... someone he cared about, only in a different way than before.

"There are things I need to tell you, about what's happened since you were gone," he added.
