Jean read the note on the mirror before she showered. It was perplexing. Not that Scott wanted to talk to her, they'd been planning a chat for a while, but that he hadn't come to her directly to tell her, or even sent her a thought down their barely-there psychic link.

She rubbed her temples. The headaches were returning. She had thought maybe the Phoenix Force hadn't been teleported here with her, but while she didn't know just how much of its power she retained, it was definitely there lying next to her power, licking at it with its tongues of flame. Jean breathed deeply until she was sure it was completely under control again.

Scott was waiting in the bedroom, as the note said he would be. He felt apprehensive, which in turn made her worry. Nevertheless, she flashed a smile at him. "Scott, you wanted to talk? What is it?"

"Jean, please, have a seat," he said, gesturing to the bed. If she didn't have any idea that this wouldn't be very pleasant she did now. It was killing him to have to do this to her but he knew that if he didn't it would slowly kill her. Jean was strong, she could move on. She would find someone else.

"I- this is not easy for me to do," he told her. "But it- I have to do it. I need you to understand that, please."

Jean sat, looking at him with a new wariness. "Scott?"

She wanted very much to read his mind, but didn't, of course. It wouldn't have been right. But she wished for the days when there had been no secrets between them. And now this. He looked so serious. She wanted to move closer and put her arms around him, but she didn't.

She tilted her head, her eyes fixed on him.

The look in her eyes was making this almost impossible, and if it weren't for the fact that he did still love Jean, he wouldn't be able to do this. As long as he kept that in mind, he'd be able to do this. He hoped.

"Things haven't been good between us for a while," Scott said. "Ever since, ever since Apocalypse. I came to realize some things about myself. About us. The man you love, that awkward, unsure teenager. Jean, he doesn't exist and he hasn't for a while."
