The hard light drive was the interesting part, really. As noted earlier, smaller was usually more powerful, and the HLD was much, much smaller than the casing around it. And a totally different type of metal than the battery pack.

What was truly amazing was that there's no other circuitry. All of Arnold Rimmer's personality, every one of his memories, the textures of his skin, hair and clothing, everything that he was...was all contained in that chip an inch square, rattling around in that lemon-sized projection unit.

And, yes, the battery pack resembled a "futuristic" sort of descendant to a "modern" 9-volt battery. There were two leads on top, that plugged in to the base of the projector. And it was stone dead, no recharge possible. HM.

Sam brought over some coffee to Penny, giving her a reassuring grin as Cable worked. If anyone could fix this, it would be Nate. He was always good at these sorts of things.

"Here ya go." He offered.

Cable poked around until he found something resembling the modern battery. It was smaller as he anticipated--smaller was better--and must have been the cause for Rimmer's malfunction or at least part of it. It was not as advanced as the technology in Cable's time (roughly two thousand years in the future), but he could work around it.

He scratched his beard as he tried to think of a way to jump start this battery. Was it even rechargeable? He telekinetically picked it out and turned it over, studying again.

Or maybe he should scrap the battery altogether and just build Rimmer a new one.

That should work.

It should indeed, Cable. It should indeed.

...Just get the voltage right, otherwise you'll have an overload and KABOOM. Well, perhaps not kaboom kaboom, but definitely a sharp, short pop and a sad lack of anything resembling Arnold Rimmer from then on.

"You're welcome." He told her a little cheerfully. Sam could tell she was a little nervous about all of this, so he made an attempt at assuring her it would be fine. "And don't you worry none, girl. Nate knows what he's doin'."
