A smile spread on his face, enthused and shark-like. How long would it take Crane to determine he was not actually there to write a book on him? Roman decided to play along for a time.

"I'm all ears, Doctor."

And charmed Roman was. His smiled never wavered as he opened his notebook and readied his pen.

"How about the last, in conjunction with using fear as a manipulative tool?"

"'Know that the mask recreates the wearer...'" Roman mused. His smile had faded at the suggestion that he'd taken up the mask because he was fearful, but...it was true. As much as he hated to dwell on the thought, as much as he tried to justify to himself that was to inspire fear.

It was an unpleasant thought.

But he was different now. He had survived and lost his fear long ago, hadn't he? He couldn't take off his mask anymore; he'd become the mask. The monster. There was nothing left for him to hide, nothing more society could hold over him. He'd come to the asylum today with a mask of a different sort, but a mask nonetheless. Even now he was justifying it as a necessary means to continue inspiring fear. Certainly not because he was a coward.

It was too uncomfortable to contemplate at the moment. Better to turn it around on Scarecrow. Better to make him dredge up old, awkward memories.

"Does that apply to yourself? Did you put on the mask because of your own fears, Dr. Crane?"

Roman met his gaze directly. Despite having a fully formed face of flesh and muscle and cartilage, his eyes were the same as ever. They still seemed to burn with a certain dullness, much like a shark's.

The corner of his mouth curled upward on one side.

"I did."

Roman unconsciously licked his lips and smirked.

"Act a little more suspicious, Scarecrow, would you? You wanted a little casual conversation and I thought you'd have fun with the farce."

He laced his fingers together, the very model of entrepreneurial.

"I'm here to offer you a business proposition."
