WHO: Silent X'ers WHERE: The MAC WHEN: During the fall back on 11/6 (Sunday) WARNINGS: crying? WHAT: Two weeks removed from everything he's ever known, homesickness hits a breaking point. WORDS: yes
Astral knew that noise, it was the sound a beached and dying whale made. He recognized it immediately, it was just yesterday he was watching about whales on Nova. Strange, their room was far too small for any whale to fit in... Unless it was elsewhere? Perhaps there was a whale in the street? No, there would be no way for him to hear it up here and it was far too late for anyone, whale or otherwise, to be awake...
It was from Yuma. Puzzled, Astral floated over the boy's body. What did the documentary say again? Humans and whales were both mammals-- Was Yuma evolving into a whale?
He did not say anything. His hands clenched and tugged at the snug bottom sheet, and his body heaved. It felt like his body was that of a stuffed doll, torn open and white cotton stuffing ripped out of him; like he'd physically collapse in on himself to fill the empty space left behind. Yuma didn't even look at Astral.
If Astral were clever with metaphors and knew how a torn stuffed toy looked, he would probably make that comparison too. Comparing Yuma's wail to a whale was the biggest leap of creativity Astral's ever had so far. The probability of it happening again tonight was far too low.
By now Yuma would give Astral a dirty look and shoo him away, complaining that he was keeping him awake. He hadn't done that or even bothered to answer Astral.
Yuma was in pain. Why? What was wrong?
"Are you alright?"
Of course Astral was concerned. The only time he could recall Yuma acting in a manner similar to now was after their encounter with Kaito. Kaito was not here. Could Yuma be afraid of the red-headed hunter in the City? That was a possibility... Perhaps...
This time words reached him, but they were not words Yuma wanted to answer -- and not a person he wanted to hear them from. Astral was a precious friend (even if he acted like a jerk all the time), but he wasn't someone with whom Yuma shared strong hometown bonds.
His hands tightened, and with a great valiance tried to temper his voice into something steady and commanding. "Go away!" didn't have the same sort of impact when he hiccuped in the middle.

"Yuma?" A pause, and again, "Yuma?"
