The silence after the Emissary left was deafening. It closed in around Sofia and it made her feel like she was the only person in the world. Her eyes were wide and out of focus from the attack and she moved out into the middle of the main street without purpose. There was no one in sight as she walked and despair wrapped itself like a blanket around her. They had fought for nothing.

A laugh escaped her lips, high and unnatural. The creature had looked into her very being and showed her what the world really was, then left her to face reality alone. Her mind couldn't cope with it, and she found small insignificant things to pay attention to, like the red sign that was in her path.

Red. Blood. Rose. She began a word game to escape her thoughts, focusing on it like a child examining a new toy.

It was a while before he saw her. There was so much damage, and it wasn't like the streets were empty of people now. Everyone who had been fighting was still around, and trying to find one person in the middle of all that wasn't easy.

But finally, after what seemed like far too long, there she was. She was standing along, avoiding the wreckage just like he was, but she seemed to be just staring at something. That was strange to Julian - he'd expected to find her helping to search through damaged buildings or something - but he was relieved enough to have found her that he didn't think too much about it. He landed and went straight to her.

"Fuck, Sofia, thank God. Are you all right?"

It took a moment for his voice to sink through her foggy brain and another for her to establish that it might be real. Real didn't rhyme with red. She shivered and looked around at him with wide eyes shaking her head.

"Bad."

If he'd been worried about her before, the start of this conversation was doing nothing to calm him down. He frowned and reached for her, touching her face and running his eyes quickly over her to check whether she was injured. If she was, it wasn't obvious to him.

"Bad?" He stared at her. Her expression was weird, afraid. "What happened?"
