Two minutes or so after the doorbell rang, Laura tugged the door open. She had changed her clothing since her earlier run-in with the thunderstorm, and now had the dog held in her arms and wrapped in a thick pink towel.

"I had to convince Jessica to stop playing with him," she explained, smiling faintly. The dog seemed to be half asleep, but he perked up immediately and stared at Julian.

Julian extended the shield to cover Laura-plus-puppy once they appeared. He smiled back, a little surprised by how happy she looked. He found himself thinking she was cute with the dog again.

Yeah, dog. Which was now looking at him.

"Hey," he said to Laura, and then looked at the puppy. "Hey...dog." He raised an eyebrow at Laura. "You and Jessica give him a name yet?"

The dog was just staaaaaring at Julian. Unblinking. Little tail wagging away happily. Staaaaaaaaaare.

"No," Laura answered as she stepped out into the rain, considering the green shield around her for a moment. "I told Jessica we should make sure no one claims him before we decide to name him."

Julian was still periodically eyeing the dog. Why did it keep staring at him? At least it wasn't barking its head off like the one that had lived next door to him would have done.

"I guess that's smart. He's probably too young to have a collar, right?"

Actually, he had no idea about that. He had been walking with his hands in his pockets, but after a minute he risked reaching to touch the dog's head.
