Curtis was happy to provide a break and a trip to the beach with Tom was a great idea of one. In some board shorts of his own on the towel next to Tom, Curtis was applying some sun screen to himself. He'd brought a cooler with food and another with drinks to their little get away space. A lot of searching around the internet had made finding it possible.
"Weather's a lot nicer right now than I thought it would be."
"How much more busy does this new job make you?" Curtis frowned a moment. "I mean...how much paperwork can build up in a single day?"
Curtis sighed a moment, turning on his side as well. "Well, think about it, man. Down here on Earth, you wander out of my range and unless we're in the middle of something dangerous...no biggie, y'know? We just like get back in range," he gestured as he spoke. "But if we're up in space and you float more that fifteen feet away...that's it, man. Game over."
"It's not that much more, but compared to the none I had before, it builds up." He smiles calmly. He really doesn't mean for it to sound as daunting as he's probably making it out to be. He's simply not used to it. "It's mostly that I have to spend more time at the bar than I usually did. I can't just show up for my shift and leave after."
He's thoughtful for a moment, then sighs softly. "I trust you, man. I know nothing would go wrong with you around." He smiles. "But I'm happy just staying here on solid ground."
"Oh," Curtis paused and thought a moment. "If you want, I can hang around later too so you're not stuck there all on your own," he offered with a shrug.
"Alright," he smiled. "Let's stick to Earth for now. But if you want something from space, let me know and I'll grab it next time I'm up there."
Tom smiled a little. "If you really want to, I won't complain. Ggio might be sticking around too, but I could always used the company. I just wouldn't want to keep you longer than you would want to. It closes late, you know." He really appreciated it though, and kind of hoped Curtis would want to.
He laughs. "Is there anything cool up there worth keeping?"
"Hey, I don't mind," Curtis replied with a grin. He wasn't going to pass up some tie with Tom. He paused at the mention of Ggio and looked up thoughtfully. "He's not going to flip out if I stay, is he? If he won't then it'll be a good time to get to know him as well as hanging out with you."
"Define cool?" he smirked. "There's all sorts of stuff up there. Rocks, pieces of broken things, none broken things. I don't think it'd be appreciated if I just took a satellite or something like that though."
"I'll try to pay you for the extra time," He replied, looking down for a moment. "He won't flip out at you, I promise. Please don't be upset with him over last time, okay? He's just a bit overprotective, and he lost someone important to him shortly before then so that was still fresh." He wanted the two of them to get along, since they were both important to him. "And I'll be there too, so it'll be okay. We can have a drink or two after closing."
He looks thoughtful for a moment, then laughs. "No chances of space booze, huh?"
"Don't have to pay me for that," Curtis replied. "I'm staying because I want to, not for a fatter paycheck," he added. "I'm not upset with him. Just making sure I'm not going to get drop kicked the moment I step in the door or something," he chuckled.
"I didn't see any up there." Curtis laughed. "I have had alien booze before though."
He looks down for a moment, feeling a bit embarrassed. "I don't mind paying you for your time, Curtis. If you want to work later hours, then you should be compensated... I'm sure you'd have better things to do with your evenings." He finishes off his first beer, tossing the bottle back into the cooler. "He'll learn to like you, man."
He laughed as well, sitting up a little. "What was that like?"
Curtis just gives Tom a look. He may claim otherwise but Curtis doesn't have much to do with his evenings. Finishing his beer as well, Curtis smiles and lets the bottles shift back to normal in the cooler. "If you insist," he says. "I hope so."
"The booze? Well, it was kind of salty. Like a good beer but with a lot of salt added. And thicker like warm syrup. Pretty strong too but Z'reg says that's just because I was human and that it's weaker for his people," the blond laughs.
Tom really is thankful for the other's offer, especially since he's not used to being the last one to leave at night, and once all the patrons and employees go home it gets kind of quiet and boring. He'd much rather spend the time with friends.
He makes a face though when Curtis talks about the space alcohol, sticking his tongue our a little. "Blegh, that's sounds terrible!"
Curtis laughs at Tom's reaction. "It honestly wasn't that bad. But then his race ate some weird stuff. Like pickles and strawberries mixed together was his favorite lunch. And certain candies were like...viagra to 'em," he shakes his head.
"Z'reg's a great guy though...kind of wish he were here in the City with me."
Tom sat up a little, looking with interest as Curtis talked about his friend, laughing a little at the viagra comment. "I don't think I want to know how you figured that out." He fell quiet for a moment. He kind of wished there were other people from his home too. "Were you and he together?"
"He told me when he freaked after I handed him a box of 'em one time," Curtis explained. "Never tested it myself," he laughed. The next question just got more laughter. "Who? Me and Z'reg? Naw, he didn't swing my way," Curtis replied.
Tom laughs, reaching for another beer and handing one to Curtis as well. "Ah, I get it," He falls silent for a while, lying back down and closing his eyes, listening to the waves and soaking up some of the sun, letting it warm him. "Did you like him?"
Again, Curtis disguises the beers. This time they're creme sodas. "What? Like wanting to get into his pants?" Curtis asks after the silence ends. "He was a buddy, not someone I was hitting on," he chuckles.
"Weather's a lot nicer right now than I thought it would be."
