Meiran liked things done in a timely way, so Wufei dragging his feet on his promise had been a source of growing aggravation for her. She had forced herself to be lenient with his job search, though in all honesty the fact he was working at a bookstore hadn't helped her urges to yell at him. So, she was actually quite happy when he finally finished the darn thing. Unfortunately his insistence on making her wait to read it outside, had taken the good humor straight back out of her mood again ( ... )

He'd taken her insults in stride, even if what he wanted to do was use them as an excuse to continue to stall, but refrained through sheer force of stubbornness. Insults were nothing new between them.

Wufei straightened when she got to the painful part, turning to face her. He couldn't help the tightness in his expression before he scowled at the accusation, eyes narrowing.

"I didn't let it happen. If I had know the elders plan, I would have stopped them." He just didn't know how he could have.

If she had been anyone else, Meiran would have known that what she was saying wasn't just unfair but verged to the idiotic. But Meiran only knew how to deal with emotional hardships in one way. Her face contorted further and she stepped closer.

"You should have. You know my grandfather." Her grandfather, gone. Her chest tightened.

It was that manner that Wufei was prepared for, and by that point Meiran would have already figured out. And she did have a point, much as it drove the knife of guilt further into his heart.

He didn't let himself step back, forcing himself to stand his ground. His fingers curled into fists at his sides. "Do you want excuses? I have none. It is done and we have to move on."
