[Gemma was rather excited that it was summertime, even if it was getting close to her birthday. This year, she had promised herself that she wasn't going to think about Mother or Kartik. At least, not anything bad about them. She was going to try to remember the happy times. It would be a bit difficult (especially with Mother), but she was going to try. She had even bought a new dress the day before, just to start the month off on the right foot.

She had not, however, expected to find a small kitten bounding around the office when she arrived on Monday morning. Gemma's "good morning" was caught in her throat when she saw the cat settle on top of her desk. She couldn't help but say the first thing that popped into her head:]

What in the world is this adorable creature doing on my desk, Matt?

She's your new co-worker.

[Matt had been in the office awhile now, long enough to get settled and used to the sound of little kitty feet prancing around the place. He continued running his fingers over a piece of paper, barely even acknowledging the creature as she mewed at Gemma.]

[Gemma set her bag down and stepped towards the animal, heels clicking lightly as she walked. She reached out to stroke a finger down the kitten's back, smiling when she purred.]

I do hope you aren't trying to replace me or anything. I'd be heartbroken.

No one could ever replace you, Gemma.

[He smirked slightly at the sound of the purr.]

Besides, she doesn't have opposable thumbs.
