Qui-Gon, meanwhile, was quite at ease save for the inkling of discontent emanating from his partner and some slight fatigue from having projected his voice for the past couple hours. He watched Obi-Wan juggle his comm link from the kitchen table, cup of tea in hand. It was late enough for little children to be in bed, but he figured he could sip caffeine for a few hours more without endangering his sleep schedule.

"Something is on your mind," he said after a few moments and several passes of the comm link.

"Something usually is," Obi-Wan murmured, his usual gentle smile tugging at his lips for just a moment. "But... there's something I'd like to show you."

He'd saved Anakin's post; all he needed to do was replay it. Which he did, offering the comm to his partner in silence.

A questioning word died in Qui-Gon's throat, cut off by a familiar voice from the comm link's speaker. Hope tinged with dread flickered through his mind as he recalled the boy with the grand and clouded destiny. The one Obi-Wan had said so very little about. He waited for the message to play out before turning back to Obi-Wan.

"Have you spoken to him?"

"Briefly, yes. I've... invited him to come and stay with us."

Obi-Wan took a breath.

"Qui-Gon... a great deal happened, after... after you entrusted him to my care. I tried to follow your example, to both teach and protect him, but... when this place pulled me out of our world, he had been killed."

It was far easier than he'd imagined. Locking away his guilt for nearly three years had certainly helped.
