WHO: Alex Wilder
WHERE: Warehouse district
WHEN: May 7th, 2:30a
WARNINGS: Just a bit of magic
SUMMARY: Alex initiates a spell that turns the City's population into children
FORMAT: Solo
He'd been scoping out this location for weeks. By now, he knew everything about it, inside and out. The building's layout, the guard route, camera positions, the times it would be least likely to house any squatters. Everything the Abstract hadn't been able to tell him he'd learned from hands-on investigation. He'd even broken in once before to plant a few materials, just as a practice run.
This time he wouldn't have to worry about slipping past anyone on the way out. It wouldn't matter anymore.
He led the flashlight lead the way as he found himself a good spot to set up, then emptied his bag and got to work. The preparation, the ritual, was important. Everything had to be exact. The circle had to be drawn this way. The candles needed to be lit in that order. Each component had to be positioned just so. The rules had to be observed, anything less and the spell would backfire. The effect would change, usually in an undesirable direction.
Alex knew this, he respected it. He gave the magic its due, and it would return the favor.
As he knelt down in the center and placed the Abstract in front of him, he couldn't help thinking back to Cassie's picture. He'd have a hell of a week ahead of him, was he sure he could handle it? The ringing phones, the panicked voices, the chaos in the street, all depending on him for the answers, was he ready for that kind of responsibility? But he didn't have a choice, he never did. Once the spell was begun, that was the role he'd have to assume. He'd watched Hundred these past few weeks, paid attention to how the office operated, what they did and what would need to be taken into consideration. He had an outline, a plan, an agenda for everything he'd have to do to keep the City That Never Sleeps from taking a nap.
Once he had everything running smoothly, he could leave the rest to the children. He'd give them the freedom from having to worry about the general maintenance, they'd show this City what they're made of. This demonstration was for them, it was their time to shine.
As he told himself this for the umpteenth time, he was satisfied that he could finally believe it. This was no time for doubt.
He turned the page.
He said the words.
He watched as the wind blew in from nowhere, the candlelight flared and swirled.
He watched as both came together around his circle in a blinding light.
He did not blink.
The fire claimed everything. The circle, the candles, each component, each reduced to ash, leaving only Alex and the Abstract alone in an empty room. The wind took those ashes across the City, spreading the magic throughout. The exchange was completed.
But this, of course, was only the beginning.
