It was very awkward, running with a broom between one's legs. James was laughing and trying his very best not to fall over in a heap of gangly legs, arms, and broomstick -- difficult, even when you're not laughing your arse off.

"RIGHT, KEEPING MY EYES OPEN AND THINKING OF QUIDDITCH," he yelled back at Sirius when he could breathe -- and then, took a deep breath and a flying leap off the roof....and, surprise surprise, stayed aloft!

"It WORKS!" he whooped and flew over near Sirius, grinning like the Cheshire cat. Perhaps bigger than the Cheshire cat. "SIRIUS, IT WORKS, WE ARE BLOODY AMAZING."

All reckless confidence aside, Sirius's breath still hitched as James went over the edge. It burst out of him again in a wild whoop as James soared upwards, triumphant. In the blink of an eye he was running for Miranda, and she roared to life and into the air without ever coming fully upright.

They might as well be second years trying out for the reserve team on the Quidditch pitch all over again.

"Alright, Messr Prongs, let's give this beauty a proper test! To Times Square and back, loser buys the first round down at the pub!"

"Oh, it is on, Padfoot." James grinned over at Sirius and hunkered down on the broom in an attempt to make himself more streamlined. Who cared if any Muggles saw? No wizarding laws here, and they were probably used to weirder things, anyway. This was the City, after all.

"See you when you get there," he called behind him as he took off, laughing. "If I'm still awake."
