He had kept the shop closed for the last few days. There wasn't much choice. Despite Mamori's best efforts, despite the fact that he'd always healed fast and been back on his feet again quickly, he was still mending. The marrow in his bone knit together a bit more every day, and he had to let it.

And he didn't want to see anyone. So he stayed upstairs with the door closed, watching the cameras and the comms, not moving much. Thinking.

But he'd left to door unlocked and the sign off, despite the darkness in the shop, as a test, an old instinct. He wanted to see if, when Duo came, he'd use the door or the window. He thought the door. It was the sort of thing Duo would do, if he was feeling guilty.

Would he feel guilty, though? Heero had said -

No, it didn't matter. Duo should be the enemy. Duo had almost killed him. He had killed him. His heartbeat had stopped. He'd felt it.

So you've come back from the dead as well. Just like Matt. But if he went home he'd be alive, for a while ( ... )

Heero glanced around, automatically looking for any cameras. As he did, he raised one of his hands, directing his gaze toward the middle of the ceiling.

"I'm here to check on you," he said into the empty store, in case Mello was able to pick up sound on the cameras. He made a motion toward the upstairs before beginning to move again. His mind settled on a concrete goal, and it was enough to make his steps sure again.

Even if he had nothing to say, he still had to check on Mello. Duo would want to know any information he had to offer when he returned. He owed it to the other to make sure he had some.

Payment for the injuries he had been forced to cause.

Hand raised - a gesture of peace? I come without a weapon. But he couldn't see Heero's other hand. There was only caution. The only fear was too little. If there was revenge to be had - revenge for what? for being a target? for being too close? - then Heero would serve it. Heero was the 01, the first, and Duo's friend. It was only right.

But Mello was not going to die yet.

He stood, slowly, and walked to the top of the stairs that led to the shop, opening it fast and aiming his gun directly into the center of Heero's forehead. There was silence for a moment, broken only by the click of the safety going off, and then he said coolly, voice hardly trembling at all, "Let me see your other hand and you can come up."

Heero stared at Mello before allowing his gaze to move down to the other's hand, studying it intently. Steady grip. He was obviously healing well.

He held up his other hand; it was empty.

"I do have a gun," he said, after a moment. He put his hand to his jacket and opened it up, allowing the make-shift holster and the gun inside to show. Better to allay all of Mello's suspicions than to cause more problems by not saying anything. "It was only intended for protection to and from here. Nothing more." Heero let his jacket go, and made sure to keep his body relaxed as he waited for the other's judgment.
