Night had already fallen by the time a familiar presence reached out to him through the Force.

Obi-Wan stood at the roof's entrance, a practice dowel in his own hand, his expression still tired but his body language calm and poised. He said nothing, merely shifted his stance into one of the opening positions of Soresu in a silent invitation.

The invitation, though silent, was accepted immediately. Though the rods didn't whisk and hiss against one another as a lightsaber even on the lowest training setting would, the presence of a living opponent was greatly welcome and appreciated.

He could have paused to ask if Obi-Wan had slept yet, but instead he sprung toward him with renewed zeal for his exercises. They both needed it, perhaps more than sleep.

Soresu was a defensive form, devoid of many of the acrobatics of forms like Djem So or Ataru, but Obi-Wan moved with almost aggressive precision. He had not sparred against his Master in a long time--and not at all since their relationship had become more intimate--so the rhythm of the fight was something new, something he had to re-learn.

He was used to Anakin's flashy, outgoing style, had trained himself to respond to that, and yet he could remember some of his Master's old tricks. Small, peculiar things, like the way he gripped the dowel, or the way he used up space.

For Qui-Gon, the routine was marginally more familiar. He may not have grown fully accustomed to the new form Obi-Wan had taken up, but his memories of the other man's idiosyncrasies were fresher, not dulled by the passage of time.

Just once, the mock blades 'locked,' forced against one another and held in position as Qui-Gon more or less dared Obi-Wan to make the first move to end the stalemate.

Matsuka hadn't spent a lot of time on the roof up until now, but dogs had to be taken out, and this late in the evening he just didn't have the energy to go down ten floors to take Mouse for a walk. The roof garden was an easy alternative.

He hadn't been expecting to find it occupied... but Qui-Gon's presence was recognizable even before he made it out onto the roof proper. Matsuka found himself hesitating just a few steps past the door, holding Mouse's leash and watching Qui-Gon's movements with wide eyes.

Though he was aware of Matsuka's presence, Qui-Gon continued to steadily and methodically move through the choreographed set of motions he had begun moments prior. Only when he had concluded the exercise did he still, give a small exhale, and acknowledge his visitor.

"It's good to see you outside your room."

Matsuka ducked his head a little shamefacedly. He'd been hiding away a little too much lately, just not able to face up to everything that had been happening - or not willing to try.

"Mouse needed to go out," he explained, bending momentarily to unclip the puppy's leash and let him loose - now that Qui-Con seemed to have finished and he'd no longer be underfoot - to sniff around the safe confines of the roof garden.

Qui-Gon watched the little dog with detached amusement. "I think we all needed a little time outside," he said. "I've spent an unnatural amount of time in the apartment... lately."
