Rue arrived in the auditorium not long after Fakir, an oversized sweater thrown over her practice clothes. Clutching her bright red toeshoes, she took a seat with the other auditioning students.

As she mentally went over the steps she had been practicing for this audition, something occurred to her. She was nervous. She was afraid she wouldn't get this part, even if everyone had told her she was most suited for it. Something about the unfamiliarity of this school had made her uncertain of her place in it. It wasn't as if she doubted her talent, Rue told herself. It was that she doubted that there wasn't someone here more talented than her.

Fakir offered Mytho a small smile as he sat down, and spared a cursory glance at Rue. Just to acknowledge her. "How are you?" he asked quietly after a moment, paying no mind to the few students eying them. He had grown used to that at their first school.

Rue barely even looked at Fakir, still focusing on remembering her own performance. If Madame Haywood were here, she could at least go backstage and warm up, but the scatterbrained woman was, as usual running late.

Ignoring her own restlessness, she looked around the room for Ben, the boy she'd invited to audition with her. As if summoned, he appeared in the doorway a few minutes later.

"You're late," she murmured as he sat down next to her. He was nothing special, and she didn't really depend on him being here, but the lack of punctuality was irritating.

"Sorry," he said unconvincingly, as he pulled out his cellphone.

Rue sat back in her seat, risking a peek at Mytho. Had he seen Ben, she wondered?
