Jack woke up and the world was still there, which meant his day was already off to a better start than he would ever have expected. He'd passed out at some point during the battle, his last thought of how much time was left before the Joker annihilated everything. He'd failed, but it looked like someone else hadn't. The thought allowed Jack to manage a smile in spite of the pain. His past with heroin was on record, which meant that they hadn't given him morphine, thank God.
Doctors and nurses came to see him and filled him in. The Joker was dead, which was good. But then they gave him the butcher's bill. No broken bones, miraculously. Shotgun pellets removed from both legs. Lots of bruises, especially in the back where his vest had stopped the rest of the pellets. Stitches in his head. The worst damage had been from the fall, and they assured him that he would make a full recovery from that... provided he stayed out of the field for most of the month. Weeks of inactivity, of not being able to do anything. It was a hard prospect for Jack to accept, but he'd been through this enough times by now to know how it worked. The more he did as they said, the sooner he'd be able to get back to the job.
Sighing, Jack sank down and resigned himself to recuperation. The doctors had told him they would contact the people who knew him and let them know his condition, which was good. He felt like he could use some visitors right about now.
