Geddoe stood at the very back of the hall, leaning on the wall in an inconspicuous spot with his arms folded over his chest. He was here to observe, to take stock...to inspect.

If only there were booze.

Geddoe turned his head her way and blinked back his surprise.

"Of course I am," he replied, as if it should be obvious regardless of whether or not it was. "I ought to ask you the same question."

It had been her who had dragged Bakura out the door. Carried him, in fact, not taking no for an answer and responding to the call for heroes, as well as the need for her friend to get his head out of his ass and be the hero they both knew he could be when he wanted to.

He had wanted to help. He had wanted to stand by the City. Hell, so did she. She had enough people she had wanted to protect, wanted to stand beside. Yuugi, for one. Fakir, Duck, Mytho, even Rue...And of course, Bakura too.

It was hard to think about, of course...she herself wasn't really brave. At least, she never saw herself that way. She just did what she could, like she was doing now.

She hoped it would be enough. That what they both were doing would be enough.

...No. She was sure it would be. If everyone banded together...

She placed her hand on Bakura's shoulder with a smile, squeezing it as a sign of reassurance.

He'd do fine. She'd do fine.

They'd both do fine.

...

She hoped.

"Don't apologize." Anzu said, smiling. "You're here, aren't you? That's a step. You've got a lot of things going for you--it's about time you step up and flaunt it a little."

And what about her? What would she do?

She was sure that there were a lot of people with speed and strength here. Probably people who could fly, shoot X-ray beams, and cast magic spells. Bakura could heal.

...

She could do something. There was always something she could do. Even if it was just passing messages back and forth, or standing next to those she cared about, she had to do something. She couldn't just sit idly by...

Megan would have been terrified if someone had asked her to speak on behalf of a team, especially in front of so many notible superheroes. Lyra was conducting herself with a fair amount of grace and dignity for someone her age. It did strike the audience as rather heroic after all. Or at least... that was the effect it had on Megan. When Lyra stepped down Meg applauded whole-heartedly and gave the other girl a little thumbs-up.

When she had the time later, pushed her way carefully through the crowds to congradulate her classmate, "Oy, lovely speech, Lyra. Awesome Force is really setting a name for themselves in this City."

"It wouldn't be the worst thing if you did have to," Megan grinned back, "Although you should maybe consider using a superhero name when involved in this stuff, rather than your real one. I suppose you're not interested in secret identities or anything like that, but it does help to add a certain officialness to things."

Was that a word? Officialness?

Scott had never been to a superhero convention before and he wondered if this was what it was like when the Professor got together with Stark, Namor, and the others. Somehow he doubted it was ( ... )

Though he didn't understand the particulars of what these X-men were about, the comment about protecting freedom caught Geddoe's attention. His eyebrow went up, and he privately resoved to himself to pay more attention to this guy.

Alex was there, as one of the two team leaders in the X-Men, and also to hear what his brother had to say. It was inspiring, really, and he could tell that Scott was sincere. And confident, so confident! There was no doubt that he would move people to follow him willingly, and that he instantly commanded respect. For a few moments he wished he could be like that, like his brother, but then Alex shook himself out of it: there wasn't any point in thinking that way.

"Nice speech. X-Factor was government-sponsored, actually," he pointed to his brother afterward. "But that didn't work out so great."

"Not my X-Factor," Scott clarified. The X-Factor that Alex had lead didn't end up so well, that was true. Of course, he had left his wife to form his version, so that wasn't all that great either.

"If you want to say something to or about your team though, you should," Scott said, clapping a hand on his brother's shoulder. The more he pushed Alex into this sort of thing the more comfortable he could get with it.

Tony Stark was there in full Iron Man armor, although his helmet is off, and sitting on the podium. He's shaved and not looking nearly as crappy as he had for most of the week Thanks to a good shower and lots of coffee.

"Alright folks, I won't take much of your time. I've already given one speech to the network, but I'll take a little bit to address all of you in a more personal setting.

"I'm sure you know me, but if you don't, I'm Tony Stark. I also go by the apt name of 'Iron Man'.

"You all know me, you know my team as well. We're the longest-running team of Avengers in the city, and although we've had our problems in the past, we're here to do whatever we can to help the whole. I know I'm not the only one who agrees that the people in this city simply aren't equipped to deal with what's likely coming this way. I've made my calls to come together, and I've informed the natural citizens that we're going to do our best, and work with whoever will join with us to save the people here in the city ( ... )

Scott listened in earnest at Tony's speech. It sure sounded nice and he didn't entirely doubt Stark's resolve, but he thought the other man was acting like he wielded a lot more clout than he did. He wondered just how many members of Tony's team had been on it since the inception of the City. And what was it, a total of four members now?

"Have you considered assigning sections of the City to teams?" Scott said as he neared Tony after the man's speech. "It might be the best way to allocate resources."

Tony knew that the key to being powerful was to act powerful, regardless of whether he was or not. It often tricked enough people, and that was most certainly how he'd managed to gain the position he'd gotten in the city so quickly. He nodded to Scott as he approached, lightly holding his helmet in his arms.

"I've thought about it, but that's certainly something we'd need to discuss with the other leaders. If we could break it down into patrol areas, different teams could build up trust with the natives, so if something does happen, they'd trust them to get them to safety," he agreed. "It's something I'd like to look into, if at all possible."

Yes, that was the face he had spoken to over the communication device. Geddoe made a mental note to himself about Mr. Stark, but didn't approach him directly at this time. They were due to meet privately in a couple of days anyway. All he could do for now was think to himself that the speeches were typical and not giving him enough insight into these people. He needed to circulate.
