I've been somewhat quiet for the last few days, settling into matters, and I've been trying to learn about this new world and everything it holds. But there is one thing, really just the one, that I have to ask about ( Read more... )

I think they've been around for a very long time. They protect the legs.

As for jeans, denim is hardy. Good for rugged work.

What do you usually wear?

A tunic and hose. Leggings if it's especially cold. They're far more comfortable.

[meekly but still asserting] Hose are technically a form of trousers.

Are they? I've never paid much attention. The ones here are nothing like the ones I'm used to, though.

Guys don't wear pants where you're from? [Staring.]

The jeans thing is like...from the 50's. They got popular with the teenage crowd and spread from there.

No. As I said to the other young lady, it's hose most of the time and leggings when it's cold.

So generally leggings, considering I live in the north.

Dude, I'm a guy. [He arches a brow.]

Hose...like panty hose? Huh. Usually only women wear that in this day and age.

[eyebrow raise returned]

I'd noticed.

And no, I've never heard them called 'panty' hose. Just hose. Panties are... [cue RED CHEEKS even though he's been married for ages to a very frisky dryad, he's still a Sendar at heart] something else entirely.

( for a moment, she just laughs. )

It's just a fashion, really. Two thousand years ago and everyone was in things that were more like skirts or dresses. And five hundred years ago it was gowns for the women and hose for the men.

And why did they change from hose? Hose was so much more comfortable!

[He's obviously used to hose.]

You know, I'm not sure. It's been awhile since I studied history. Probably something to do with the rise of industry?

My people are plenty industrious, both those I was raised with and my own Rivans.

I don't see why industry would require uncomfortable clothing.

What are you used to wearing?

Hose or leggings, quite frankly. And I can say with authority that they're much more comfortable.

[ She had wondered if he might be used to wearing robes. ]

There kind of the same thing aren't they? At least in theory, I mean. I don't think you'd want to wear today's hose and leggings though. Then again, maybe you would.

Having seen what people here think is hose? No.

[he didn't know your number but he heard the other voice posts so...]

Oh, that's you, then. Garion, was it? [snerk] Problem with trousers?

Yes, this is Garion. And it's not so much a problem as a misunderstanding.

How're you doing, Sanji?

Couldn't be better. [since there are sunny skies and a bright blue ocean behind him] Yourself?

For the record, I believe you saw how easy it is to fight even in tailored trousers, so you don't have to be afraid of them.

I'm not afraid of them. They just... feel quite a bit different. I'm not sure I like it.

[a scratch behind his ear]

Then again, maybe I've just gotten spoiled.
