[The video flicks on to reveal WALL-E staring intently. There is a dappled pattern of shadow and light on him, like the pattern of light coming through trees. WALL-E turns the camera to reveal that he's standing under a large, leafy elm tree.]

This is so beautiful...

Do you not have trees where you're from?

[WALL-E shakes his head] No. All the plants on Earth were long gone. In seven hundred years of work, I only ever saw one plant, and that was recent.

But this Earth has plants everywhere! I never realised how beautiful it was.

Ohhh, that's so sad! It must be amazing to see so much green everywhere.

Did you really work for seven hundred years?

Oh yes. It was only supposed to be for five years, but the mess was much bigger than everyone else thought. Towards the end it was just me working all by myself, with just my cockroach for a friend. Even the other WALL-E units broke down after a while...

No - no plants or anything growing at all. The only living things I ever saw were cockroaches.

[A pause] No, wait; I did see an astronaut really easrly on - the first decade of work. For the other... um... six hundred and ninety years it was just the cockroaches.

Earth.

I keep getting told that this is Earth too, but it doesn't look anything like the one I came from. There can't be more than one... can there?

Have you never seen growing plants before?

No. I only ever saw one tiny plant in all my years until I came here, and that wasn't much bigger than the grass I'm sitting on. I was working to help clean up Earth and hopefully get things to grow again, but that was a long time ago...

...Only one? How can that be?

You are from a different Earth, with no green growing life? None at all?

[This is hideous, you have no idea.]

No. None at all. No plants, no animals apart from cockroaches, not even much water. Rain was pretty rare; I saw dust storms more often than anything else.
