This city is simply full of vermin, wouldn't you say?

[A cackle, which echoes.  It appears Beatrice is somewhere underground, or at the very least abandoned.  Following her laughter, there are the sounds of what are horrified---but inhuman-sounding---screams and shrieks, followed by the sounds of tearing and stabbing----even sizzling.]

[A beat as there are more terrified screams in the background, Beatrice cackles for a moment, before answering:]

And why is that, my dear boy? Children are the future, meant to take over in their parents' stead. In other words, they are often expected to lead.

It's easier.

[Pause.]
And not all children are meant to do that.

Then you would rather be crushed under someone's thumb, robbed of your own will, your own ambition, and forced to live your entire life through theirs?

[A theatrical sigh, yet there's some note of genuine sympathy in it. This kid sounds so...dead.]

How tragic, child. You are right in that not all children are capable of handling the responsibility of a leader, but there must at least be some hope of that instilled in them.

[what.]

Not in the literal sense, no.

[Suddenly, there's the sound of footsteps, and Beatrice lets out an ominous laugh. There's a pause, and in the midst of that, the sound of something---someone, as evidenced by the shriek---being stabbed.]

These vermin appear to be some kind of beast. Vampires, I believe. They have fangs, and their eyes glow in this dark.

I'm in a tunnel, if you want specifics.

[what the hell kid did you NOT do well in English class]

What I was speaking of earlier was merely a metaphor, boy.

[Amanda is eating a sandwich in an upscale deli.]

[She looks completely bored with everything she just saw.]

[Beatrice lets out a small laugh. Ah, Amanda. Same shit, different day, huh?]

Awfully relaxed, are we, my dear? Worry not---I am getting rid of the subordinates of another so-called "villain."

I don't know where you got the idea I was worrying about anything.

You go to a lot of plays?

I was simply making sure.

[A chuckle.] I am fond of the theatre, yes---operas are personal favorites of mine. In fact, I liken life to one grand, epic opera.

[Somehow, she's not surprised.]

And why is that, Ryou?

[A beat---it could be interpreted as hesitation, on Beatrice's end. When she speaks up, she sounds more determined, more...righteous.]

...Hunting down the last of the Major's subordinates. Also, I am seeking information as to where he may have hidden the last of that gas.

...An economical way of looking at things. After all, you are the humble sort. But humility also makes for a good leader.

[She chuckles for a moment, and there's a pause on her own end, after which her voice becomes more serious.]

That's right. The gas that caused the City's inhabitant to fly into that odd rage.

[Rapunzel has made it to a mac apartment, apparently, as she is sitting in it, apparently on the top floor, looking out the window. But now she's frowning at her phone.]

...What are those noises?

[Want some more unnerving sound effects? Here, Beatrice just got done impaling one Nazipire with a spear made of light. Enjoy that dying howl. The smirk is evident in Beatrice's voice as she responds:]

...Why, they are the noises of vermin meeting their maker.

[She wilts back a bit. There's an unhappy chameleon frowning from her shoulder, too.]

But...those...it sort of sounds like people...

No.

[And her voice turns icy.]

They were once human, girl---that is, if they were not created through other means. They no longer know what it is like to be human.
