Talking Points and Pointed Talks

May 12, 2010 22:12

[At six pm, Eastern time, news stations across the board, basic cable channels, and a number of AM radio stations will have broadcast the following address, with some going over it multiple times with some political commentary to go along with. For those of you tuning in to the live broadcast, the following is the President's address to Congress.]

Mister Vice President, Madame Speaker, Members of Congress, my fellow Americans, and eyes and ears the world over: two days ago, on the afternoon of May tenth, two thousand ten, the capital of this great nation was attacked by terrorist forces. The Museum of Natural History, one of the most prized landmarks of this nation, was destroyed in the blast.

This museum housed within its walls our heritage, some of the very roots that define us as a nation. This culture, this history, this identity of ours was attacked, and treasures without number were destroyed. Not merely exhibits, no. Not merely things, not merely relics and the knowledge of our forefathers, of our parents, of our brothers and sisters the world over, no. What was taken from us was our future.

As many of you are aware, there were... many casualties. Among them were visitors from overseas, our neighbors around the world. Among them were neighbors down the block, our friends, our co-workers. Among them were our fathers and mothers, our spouses, our brothers and sisters.

Among them, one hundred and nine of our sons' and daughters' lives were taken in the attack. My fellows, consider this number. One hundred and nine of this nation's children were killed in this attack in our very capital. What bright futures were snuffed out that day? How many of those children would have become our great scientists, or future leaders? How many times might they have changed the world?

How long are we going to sit on our hands, while human vermin like the perpetrators of this heinous attack nest in our own soil? How long are we to stay our hand, while our brothers and sisters are held captive in their homeland by these criminals and thieves? I ask you, Members of the Senate, Members of the House, and I ask you, Madame Speaker, Mister Vice President, how many more of our nation's children will perish before we act? Before we take back what land rightly belongs to us? Before we right years of wrongdoing done against us? How long, I ask you, before we bring them to justice for the atrocities they've committed? For every moment that passes by without action, for every day that we do not act, we announce to them "Go ahead! Rob our pockets! Destroy our families! Erase our history! Defile every law that guides our nation, feel free!"

I say no more. Today I stand before you, the Members of our United States Congress, and I ask that you do what is just, and what is right. I ask that you do not take this attack upon the very foundation of this great country lying down. I ask that you declare your support of decisive military action against the HIVE organization, and that you will finally act to dispense justice.
