Oh! Christmas!

It's originally about the birth of Jesus, actually. Saint Nicholas was added because of his reputation of gift giving. He's the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, children and students. So today's Santa Claus is kind of based off of him. Santas robes are even based off of him.

Ah... Well there's more, but I don't want to talk your ear off. There's probably lost of information on the saints in local libraries though.
