Grouse Lakes Basin - Sat, 22 Jun 2019, 12:30pm
After
hiking past Carr Lake to the foot of Feely Lake (previous blog) we continued around the edge of Feely. The going was slow because here, at the foot of a north-facing slope, there were many snow drifts. Yes, even now in late June.
Hawk clambers over the top of a 5' deep snow drift at Feely Lake
Navigating the snow banks was fun but also time-consuming. And ultimately the snow thwarted us from completing the hike we came here to do: to hike about 2.5 miles in to Penner Lake. Beyond Feely Lake the trail climbs a slight ridge. A few hikers coming back from us warned us that it's snow covered all the way up. Hawk's back is iffy right now so we decided it was too risky to chance it.
Well, Penner Lake will be there next time... and next time may only be a few weeks away. As I mentioned a few blogs ago,
we can come here when we're in Tahoe in August.
There was even snow out into Feely Lake today. A snow-berg?
Turning back at Feely Lake hardly means the hike is over. There's still ample beauty around us. The views out across the lake are practically inebriating, particular the one above with the "snow-berg" near the shore. And there are already 3 other hikes in the area I've thought of trying next. I know at least one of them won't be snowed in.
The adventure continues!
