Earlier today
I tendered my resignation from my job. I did it because I felt underused and underpaid, and Management was not supportive enough of my career goals. In short, I was doing work and earning pay similar to what I was at 10 years ago in my career. I tendered my resignation not 100% expecting to actually quit but as a negotiation step. But what came next surprised me.
After lunch today, they walked me.
The director of HR called (I was working from home) with my now-former boss on the phone (it was after 10pm in the UK for her!) and informed me the company had chosen to accept my resignation. They were not interested in bargaining to keep me. In fact, they said, they looked at the work I'm doing and decided they don't even need to keep me for the next two weeks. They will give me pay in lieu of work.
I'm surprised and dismayed by how quickly that answer came. Of course, I knew that submitting my resignation could be the end of my employment. Even when making a negotiation ploy one must assume anything one says could be taken at face value. But for them to not attempt a counteroffer.... And to have come to that decision so fast....
