Mostly Sober Six Weeks

I've been mostly sober for the past 6 weeks.

No, this hasn't been a purposeful, meme-based thing like Sober October or Dry January. I haven't gone dry because I think booze is ruining my life or to score points on social media. I've avoided booze for all but a few days these past several weeks because I've been sick and haven't wanted to drink any.

When I came down with a cold in late January I had symptoms that lasted for two weeks. While I was coughing I didn't want any booze. Even the thought of drinking it made me feel a bit sicker. I had about a week after that before I got sick again. During that time I had wine at home with dinner one night, then of course a few nights of drinking almost too much in Las Vegas for a sales conference. I was sick with another cold when I came home from Vegas. I tried drinking 2 glasses of wine with dinner once, a week later, when the worst of the symptoms had subsided. I felt so cruddy for several hours afterwards that I haven't had any more booze since then.

Even now, more than 3 weeks after the start of the second cold- I think it was more than just "a cold", though definitely neither a flu nor Covid- I've been reluctant to resume drinking. I haven't been confident I'd actually enjoy it. Today I bought some beer at the store while were out shopping, though, so tonight maybe I'll dip my toe back into the water with a bottle or two of beer.

being sick sucks, booze
