Mostly Took it Easy this Weekend

We mostly took it easy this weekend. Short version: Saturday morning we went up to San Francisco to visit friends. Saturday evening we had dinner locally with another friend. Sunday we sat out by the pool all day- yes, we used the pool, too- and had friends over. Sunday evening Hawk and I went out for dinner by ourselves. I called it an early night Sunday night and was in bed around 9pm.

Long version after the cut.

We drove to San Francisco on Saturday morning to visit our friend, "Del", who's in hospice care at the VA medical center. I wrote about Del's condition 6 weeks ago. We also saw him 3 weeks ago. Since then he's moved from home-based care to the VA hospital's community living center. His condition 3 weeks ago was a noticeable step down from 6 weeks ago. This weekend it was palpably lower. I'll write more about this separately so as not to turn this blog too grim.

"D", Del's spouse, arrived after we'd been there 30-45 minutes. We knew D was coming; we'd coordinated schedules in advance. The three of us spent a bit of time together with Del then went out for lunch. We need to support D as much as anyone. While we can help make Del's last few days better, D will be dealing with this for likely decades.

Saturday afternoon we arrived home later than expected. Also, since lunch was later than expected, we weren't hungry for dinner until close to 7. We took it easy for a few hours then met up with some_other_dave, in town from Hawaii, for dinner. We went to one of our new local favorite restaurants, Vive Sol, a spot we rediscovered a few months ago in our effort to try new area restaurants.

Sunday was a true take-it-easy day in that we didn't get in a car at all. We didn't just stay home, though. We spent several hours in the afternoon at the complex's pool. We had our friends with their 9 year old son come over to hang out with us. They enjoyed the time with us, noting especially that it allowed "the 50 year olds" to hang out while also keeping their kid engaged.

Around 4:30 we bid them goodbye and stayed at the pool area a bit longer, relaxing on lounge chairs. As the hour wore on past 6pm we headed out for dinner. ...But didn't I say we didn't step in a car all day? Yes, we walked to dinner in downtown Sunnyvale. It's a smidge over a mile. The weather was great even in the early evening so we sat outside for street dining (the block has been closed off to traffic for a few years now) in addition to walking both ways.

We relaxed back at home after that. I was so tired I went to bed early. On the one hand I felt silly about tiring out so early. On the other hand I consider it part of the ebb and flow- or, as I've described it before, Weekends Fast and Slow.

being sick sucks, taking it easy, life's a beach, pool life
