David, I think that you're pressuring yourself too much to be in a perpetually artistic state of mind. Not everything that comes out of your head will be something poignant. In my opinion, however, there's a sort of beauty in the random flow of consciousness. It's almost artistic in itself- the way in which we think if we let allow our minds to wander freely. Sort of like Freud's talking cure. Like you said, practice, write down observations. If you land upon something intriguing, and I'm sure you will, then develop it into a poem. And I doubt that will happen everyday, althought I suppose it could. But your artistic productivity does not measure your worth as a person. I have a journal rather like this but I don't consider it my artistic expression journal...it's simply my expression journal. Whether it's noteworthy or not, it's good to get it out. Remember- the opposite of war isn't peace, it's creation! *grooves like a lone white guy*
