Yep that's right. So you're covered. The only downside is that I think that particular travel card doesnt give you rides on buses. You can just pay to go on a bus, but if you think you'll be on many, then an oyster card is still a good investment (more than three trips and it's cheaper if you do get an oyster card still.
I think the reason you had trouble with it is that it's all a bit odd. I mean a lot of places around the world are doing this now, but it's still odd the idea that what we used to have as paper cards is now loadable onto a bit of plastic... yeah, it's odd. But that was what I was clumsily trying to explain the other day.
Anyway, as you say, you're right! And yes, if you are getting the heathrow express, it's a separate ticketing system anyway, and if you're getting the slower tube, then you just get an extension fare that covers you to the borders of the 2 zone.
In DC we have a Smartcard, which is kind of like an Oystercard. It costs $10 to get one and then you just keep loading it with cash whenever you need to. Unlike an Oystercard, which I think stops charging you once you hit a certain amount, the Smartcard charges you for every trip. The Smartcard is valid on Metro trains and busses but not on MARC trains.
I don't mind using the slower Tube to get to my hotel. That way I can look around at the city! I mean, if we're above ground any of the time?
In that case it's absolutely perfect!!!! The tube does go overland, but nowhere near the city. Do get the tube though, it's cheaper and doesn't take that much longer. And while you might not be looking out the window, I still maintain that the Tube is the most interesting place to people-watch of all commuter experiences around the world!!!
Sorry meant to say, yeah if you dont have a travel card on it, the Oystercard does have a daily cap on the various forms of transport (though not across transportation types). Yes, on the Smartcard in DC... I do love the Metro and still have my Smartcard!
Travelcards cover tubes and buses for your chosen zones. So if you've got a zone 1-2 travelcard and want to travel outside those zones you have to pay the extra
