Honestly, they're marginally better than Facebook, who claim ownership to anything you upload, and just as skeevy as GMail, which keeps everything you ever send or receive on their servers until *they* decide it has to go, even if you delete it. (I also find the way they customize your ads super creepy and a little bit invasive.)

The way we define privacy has always been unrealistic (the sheer amount of publicly available information, even in the days before the internet!) but the last few decades are revolutionizing it without our even noticing. In the UK, where surveillance culture has taken a much stronger hold, the average adult is in about seven thousand databases. It wouldn't be as many here in North America, but almost certainly well into to the hundreds, if not more, and most of them you're unaware of. Most of them are pretty innocuous - a lot of it is commerce-based - but it's still a loss of control of your information. Hell, your government has a stated goal to profile every American. I really like it too. It makes me think and actually had me pondering the use of yesterday - the "wear purple" day a lot. Glad you got something out of it!
