I spent my time in the Torchwood fandom trying to figure out the organization's archiving practices. (FYI, evidence is they take a fonds-based approach.) I think that the Doctor's library catalogue probably hasn't been updated since his eighth incarnation, if there's one at all, unless Donna had a go at it. She was probably scandalized to find the ( Read more... )

Hee, you're such a geek♥ (and I say that with the utmost affection, of course ;)).

I didn't end up going to the reading room because I had a spontaneously-arranged meeting with my supervisor. I'll see how much work I can get done while in my own room first, before I decide to change locations. :>

THESE ARE SRS ISSUES I NEED TO KNOW THE ANSWERS TO, OKAY?

The Canadian Consulate in Chicago organizes things impeccably, except for that one time Turnbull tried out a British system (I think that there's a distinct cataloging system in at least partial use. I think) until Thatcher got too angry because she couldn't find anything and made him change it back.

They're all exquisitely well-trained (Fraser) or natural-born (Turnbull, Thatcher) records managers, but that side of things would flow more smoothly if Turnbull stopped trying to "improve" the system.

That was a fun game, thank you :P

Can I revise it? I think that Thatcher actually falls into the "trained" camp, because she thinks she (knows she) has to do it.

Jack and Owen would be a mess, for slightly different reasons, although Jack would step up when he thinks it's important. (You can bet that if he ever stored any information on the Doctor, that it would have been beyond meticulous.) Gwen would be a pretty average organizer, willing to engage and be helpful but not especially invested, and I'll bet that Tosh is actually really great at organizing *herself*, but not at incorporating the way anyone else does things. Dealing with all of the mundane stuff and making sure everyone had the information everyone needed was totally Ianto's way of earning his keep before he started doing field work :P

(OH MY GOD, everyone replying to this post are my new favourites people ever. It's ridiculous how much joy I'm getting from this.)

It's like you're speaking a different language, since I didn't understand bunches of this. Also, you've just taken cataloguing and organisation geekiness to a whole nother level. =)

We definitely use a very specialized jargon! Especially the archivists. I hope you enjoyed what you managed to understand :P
