Relative fandom dinosaur here. In the mid-90's when I started reading & writing fic, FF.Net was very widely used with an okay reputation but not a horrible one. Like going to a big name box bookstore instead of that cute, family-owned indie bookshop. Cute, family-owned bookshops were the fen-generated archives like Lori's, Fonts of Wisdom, Kielle's CFAN.
Man, what happened to the family-owned bookshops? They're really not in style at all anymore.
Thanks for your perspective! I've been hanging around fandom for a while now, but I'm aware there's still a lot of missed, never mind that I don't remember much clearly before I got back involved with LJ in 2003 (ah, Gravitation, you weird, adorable show).
