Okay, so I think I've had enough slash to calm me down, take me down from the ceiling a bit. Because coming home from seeing the Watchmen? I was furious.
Am I the only one who thinks that Zack Snyder is a misogynistic hack who can't seem to make anything other than painfully overblown movies for adolescent boys, which poorly attempt to make up for their lack of plot by cramming in tons of gore? I mean, speaking as a connoisseur of the zombie film, while the original Dawn of the Dead was a subtle critique of American consumerism and had a strong female protagonist, Snyder's remake was nothing but a testosterone-laden sausage party with zero plot or character development.
As for The Watchmen, I saw it by chance last night. I've never read the comics or even knew anything about it beforehand. First of all, I thought it was never going to end. :P Secondly, I definitely agree with your assessment. I thought it was bland, sexist, and had no character development. For example, when there was the big reveal that the Egyptian guy (?) was the real villian, all I was thinking was "I suppose I'm supposed to be shocked by this, but I'm not, because I don't know a fucking thing about this guy
( ... )
Thank you! As I was watching it, I was vaguely amused by the fact that Dr. Manhatten actually had a dick but it was more "America's finally growing up and is doing so like every snotty, girl-hating jackass I went to middle school with"
I feel bad that I didn't look into it more. I stopped at "Ooh! Papa Winchester!", so my 12 year old brother had to sit there with his hands over his eyes while two German sheppherds chowed down on a kid's leg.
I thought Dr. Manhattan was the cheapest superhero ever. I hate sci-fi stuff where one guy has every awesome power, ever. And I rolled my eyes at the thought that every awkward adolescent wannabe-badass is going to walk around acting like Rorschach, just like they were pretending they were Heath Ledger's Joker a few months ago.
I have to say that gore doesn't bother me. I usually enjoy it when it's done right. When it's not, I usually laugh uncontrollably. I kept doing it during Watchmen, and every nerd in the theatre was glaring at me. People think it's because I'm a secret sadist or something, but really, I just find the macho American glorification of violence surreal enough to be high-larious.
I liked Dr. Manhatten at first. I got into his really calm-sounding voice and how he seemed pretty fucking zen about everything. Then he fucked off to Mars and built that hitty CGI clock and all I could think was "Dude, you've been outdone by fucking Sylar."
I'm not into the gore, especially when it was this superfluous. Does it serve the story to see some guy get his face boiled?
But ultimately, it's just a movie. It's not going to cause anything bigger than "Dude! That was fucking awesome!...Man, I could go for some pizza right now..." It takes a lot to raise my feminist hackles and I don't like being jerked around by some lame-ass hack director.
Your comments are making me totally apprehensive about the movie ten times more. The whole rape thing with Sally Jupiter was taken in a much better, well developed context than it appears it was in the movie. I don't remember her ever saying that line. But her relationship with the Comedian was so complex and not developed that I loved it.
Ugh, and I totally didn't need this going in to see the movie. I'm already pissed off from a horrible six hour flight and shit at home (not drama, just my family dying off as usual, carry on world).
Just read the comic book. I hate that people are going into this movie not reading the comic. As a fan of the comic, severe fucking fan, it's pissing me off.
After consulting with a friend of mine who knows those comics inside and out, it has been determined that most of the blame for the misogyny lies with Alan Moore and the writing staff. I'm willing to believe that the subject was treated with more complexity in the text but I no longer see a point in wading through the violence to get to something that I'm pretty sure I'll end up hating anyway.
I'm sorry to hear things aren't going well on your end. :(
