We don't need to equip them with Harriers, and would not want to. Its basically a 30 year old airframe and technology.
Ideally we would base part of our purchase of new Multi Role aircraft on the carrier, that is if we settled on the JSF, and purchased some in the STOVL configuration. Realisticly we would probably equip the troops with Heliocopter transports and attack craft. Not as versatile but still much better than what we have now.
There is a guy in Alaska building a Giant Robot thingy. He has the chassy built, and the actuators as well, can even get the arms to move at this point. But its is years away from being a usefull tool, let alone weapons platform.
Arn't they going to gut healthcare. They can get it from there...
I realize my "wants" can nto all happen right away. The liberals have let the military degrade to such a state that it will probably take 20 years to get it back to the point where it can do the things it will be asked to do.
Yea, in all fairness this is the thing about the Conservative platform I like the most, because I HATE, and I really mean , HATE the way that the liberals are killing the military. I really think people have become too fixiated on health care , while I agree its not within the Canadian Nations will to go for American styled military spending , I agree with Granatstein that Canada needs to do more in terms of military spending.
I'm not a big supporter of military spending, but I think we at least need to be able to support the missions we commit ourselves to... We can't even do that, right now.
The engineers in Chilliwack often came in very handy to help out with flooding in the Fraser Valley. Getting troops and equipment through the mountains takes time. In the event of a severe earthquake, the road and rail lines might be impassable.
Having said that, I agree that consolidating the regular force in a small number of large bases is probably best. I think that a heavy airlift capacity is needed, however, to ensure that troops and equipment can quickly get to where they are needed in the event of a crisis.
I was dismayed to hear the conservative proposal to put an infantry battalion in Goose Bay during the Labrador byelection. I don't think it makes a lot of sense.
On a final note, if Canada follows tradition, it will spend millions refurbishing and upgrading the leopards, then give them away at fire sale prices, just like the CF-5s.

But given their capabilities and the missions we are asked to do by the UN worth the expence.

How much for a VSTOL? Say the Harriers the USMC is retiring? Two squads of those ought to just about wipe out our savings.
