Aaaaah, this chapter. When I read it, I felt as though I had been waiting years for it, ever since I read Chamber of Secrets - Ginny vindicated at last!! The monster in Harry's chest is a positively brilliant metaphor - cute for the kids, and hilarious for the parents.
What I also really like about this chapter is that Ginny comes into her own : she's just so damn feisty, outspoken and fun, you instantly understand why Harry's taken with her.
As for Ron and Hermione...
Hermione is at wit's end, not realizing how despite all her attentions and her secret support, her nagging has only made Ron feel bad about himself
It's a shame Hermy never read Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars, or she would know that giving a man unsollicited advice or help only makes him feel incompetent. But honestly, the scene with the canaries nearly broke my heart - the picture you get in your head reading it is beautiful and it's a very touching Harry/Hermione (gasp!!) scene as well, because you can see here the deepness of their friendship.
I love your description of this chapter! Ah, so much good stuff on the shipping front.
Much as it embarrasses him, he has finally acknowledged that he knows what's going on between Ron and Hermione as well as we do, and he's finally treating Hermione as someone whose feelings need to be taken care of. He's still a teenager, but he's come a long, long way in a year.
Yes! I love how much maturity Harry shows in this chapter, and throughout HBP in general.
