As I was re-reading this chapter, I noticed something I hadn't before: Merope was thought to be a Squib, or nearly one. Does anyone remember JKR's statement that there would be one person who would only manage to do magic later in life? Everyone used to talk about how she might mean Petunia or Dudley, and I was still puzzling over that quote until I re-read this chapter, and realized she was probably talking about Merope.

I translated this chapter to Portuguese in a fan translation when HBP was released. so I really had to pay attention to every singke word. And since then I have this opinion too. She isn't a Squib, obviously, but she is really very bad in making magic.
