Marvel Question: Emma Frost's Powers

How invasive are Emma Frost's powers? For example, if Dr. Strange had a massive crush on Peter Parker (not actual pairing in the fic, sorry to any Strange/Spider-man shippers lol), would she be able to pick up on it without having to look in Strange's mind, so to speak? What if Peter was put in danger and Strange was very agitated and worried, ( Read more... )

Like most comics powers, it varies a lot, but Emma doesn't seem to pick up stray thoughts as easily as Charles does. On the other hand, she's totally casual about going into other people's minds and does it all the time. Charles seems to pick up more feelings and general ideas, Emma gets more specifics so she can make snarky remarks about them. It's never clear if this is a personality thing or an actual power difference, though.

In New X-Men when she did therapy with Scott, it was inside his head, displaying fears etc. quite literally while she talked him through it. New X-Men #128 has some more traditional talking therapy, and some of the sexy telepathic stuff is in New X-Men #136.

Not exactly the question you were asking, but... full_metal_ox June 29 2011, 21:33:08 UTC
Your choice of Dr. Strange as an example--although I realize that you're using him as an arbitrary stand-in--complicates the issue; a world-class magic-user is normally not going to be running around with the contents of his skull unshielded from random telepathic snoops.

This, in turn, raises the issue of how much overlap there is between magic and psionics; comic-book convention tends to keep the two compartmentalized, in the spirit of the magic/science dichotomy; some RPGS, such as Dungeons and Dragons, distinguish between the two but allow for an area of overlap; many real-world occultists maintain that the distinction is without a difference (see Isaac Bonewits's Authentic Thaumaturgy, a treatise on translating magic and psionics as real-world believers interpret them into RPG systems ( ... )
