I think Inferi are creepy as fuck, but that's just me. XD;
Anyway, I forget how they are made, but they're controlled by Dark Magic, I believe. They're essentially like zombies. The only way to fend off or kill them is with fire. There was a lake of Inferi in HBP, so they can survive underwater. There were also a lot of people hoping that Harry would encounter his parents as Inferi...
The singular is "Inferius", the plural is "Inferi".
(Also, I checked the lexicon but it doesn't seem to have that much on Inferi. Sorry. :()
Zombies really creep me out, so I was rather glad not to see them wandering around in DH! They seem to be susceptible to fire, though we don't know if there's other ways to kill them. Although they'd been lying in a lake for a long time, they hadn't decomposed much at all - this could be a property of that particular lake, though, not the Inferi themselves.
Oh, that is an intersting point. I never really considered it was the lake that kept them ziplock fresh, and not the dark magic. /scratches chin/ interesting, very interesting.
So you've read DH? Mind if I ask you a few questions?
I'm happy to answer questions, but it's midnight here and I'm about to go to bed! I suspect other fine users of this comm will answer your questions sooner. If not, ask away!
