I think people put a certain premium on outsiders looking in. I've heard that the Slavistics departments in the North American universities have very few foreign educated linguists. Somehow belonging to the group whose music you are performing seems to diminish your accomplishment. Add to the mix the accent, the social awkwardness (no, I don't remember what an uproar that movie caused because I wasn't here then) and the $$$ issues (those private parties in their communities are way more lucrative than upscale bars)- you get the picture.
My prediction is that this is a sign of things to come, that you will come to find west coast whiteys seeming whiter than the whitest whiteys over here! I know you're not trying to generalize about the musicians you saw (I am!) but I'm pretty sure I would/will feel the whiteness of Vancouver/west coast more strongly after having been out here in more diverse metropolises for so long. I sometimes fail to highlight what an education it was for me.
Also BC will tune you into native peoples' art and issues much more than any other province, for sure. Well it and maybe Manitoba. It's something I appreciate/miss more now that I've been away from it.
Hey dude! No, I haven't been cooking much good because I don't have a good set of "ingreets" yet. We've been using these canned green curry sauces a lot. they'll make almost anything mouth watering ;)
