Compost isn't totally maintenance free. It needs to be kept moist and turned over once in a while so the aerobic bacteria can do their work. I'd use the nice chocolate cake-looking stuff for now, and then give the whole works a good turning over if you can bear to do it. Chicken bones in compost aren't a great idea, as you can see; they take years to break down.

The little trilobite-looking guys are sow bugs - aka woodlice - and they're a good thing around compost. They help break down plant matter.

Yup.. I'm hoping that, after I move to vancouver, I have a bit of space where I can start and *maintain* my own compost ;)

steve says bones (and egg shells) add calcium, though they take years to break down, but take patience i guess.

maybe it would speed it up to grind up the bones, evil-giant style?
not that i'm gonna do it with someone's sick 6-year-old kfc garbage, mind you..
