I feel kind of dumb. My old roommate Julie left town without paying me back my last months' rent (~$500). The thing is that she even had the nerve to get the subletter after I left to pay *her* a last month's rent deposit, and when I asked for it, she angrily said I would get my money back when she left the apartment and acted like I was trying

That sounds so stressful, Daniel! There really is something strange and specific about the roommate "dynamic" that seems to make some people feel entitled to opportunism and meanspiritedness, even when those aren't traits they exhibit in any other avenue of their lives. It's really bizarre!

Another friend of mine is actually in the exact same situation. She's considering taking the ex-roommate to small claims court. Maybe something you could think about?

But... wait, why didn't you get your deposit back when you first moved out? And why were you helping with cleaning and repainting? Were you never taken off the lease?
