Teaser: The two Lukes are having a contest. Poor Flora.

The elder of the two Lukes adjusted his tie and sauntered into the dining area for breakfast. The Professor was already seated at the table, with only the very top of his trademark hat visible over the top of his morning newspaper. His hand appeared now and then to collect the cup of tea and withdraw it behind the paper, presumably for a sip, before returning it to the table.

His younger self was also seated at the table, busily devouring a piece of toast. He mumbled something between mouthfuls that could potentially be interpreted as a ‘good morning.’

And Flora was standing by the counter. When she saw him come in, she smiled. “Good morning,” she said in that soft voice of hers. “Would you like anything for breakfast?” By some miracle, the girl had finally mastered the art of not turning food into sentient lifeforms, so there was no danger in accepting the offered meal.

He nodded. “I’d be fine with some toast.”

As if on cue, the toaster popped up, providing him with the very item he had requested. She carefully pulled the hot bread from the appliance and set it on a plate before passing it to him with that same smile. “There you are.”

Luke took the plate with one hand and caught her fingers with the other, pulling her hand to his lips and bowing slightly to place a quick kiss on the back of it. “Thank you very much.” He threw her a wink for good measure before turning and heading towards the table, where his younger self had momentarily abandoned his own breakfast in favor of giving him a glare.

Flora, meanwhile, had blushed bright red. She stammered something, then turned and rushed from the kitchen while muttering something about forgetting something upstairs. The sound of rapid footsteps thudding up the staircase echoed down into the kitchen.

The elder Luke sat for a moment; then he took a bite of his toast, swallowed, and smiled casual at his younger self. “I believe that ties the score, doesn’t it?”

“This isn’t over yet!” the younger boy said in a voice that was barely more than a hiss.

“I never said it was,” the elder Luke said, visibly amused.

The younger Luke smirked, though he was still a bit irate. “If we’re tied, then you’re not really more charming than me after all, are you? Because you’re not winning.”

“Boys.”

The two Lukes both jumped at the sound of Layton’s voice from behind his newspaper. He was still hidden behind the paper, and had been so quiet that they had almost forgotten he was there.

“I am not entirely certain what sort of contest you’re having,” the Professor said in a stern tone. “But if I had to hazard a guess, between the flowers, the little gifts, the poetry, the kisses on the hand and cheek, the winks, the smiles, and everything else, you two are having some sort of contest to see who can fluster Flora the most.”

Both of the boys looked down at their respective breakfasts, properly chastised before even being officially chastised by their teacher and mentor. They hadn’t really realized that he was paying that close attention to their actions over the past couple of days.

“That is not how a gentleman behaves,” Layton said in that same firm tone. He turned a page of his newspaper before he continued. “And I am sure that Flora has blushed enough to last a lifetime. Do I need to say anything more?”

Two small voices replied in unison. “N-no sir…”
