Flora Reinhold favors the darkness. She really has no choice in the matter.

As per her father’s wishes, she came to live in the home atop the odd tower in the center of the town after his death. Oh, she sneaks down to the village now and again, but most of her days are spent far above the earth, in the strange structure that she once mentally likened to something a child would construct with half melted blocks. It is a comfortable place to live, to be fair, but it is not home.

It rarely seems as sunny up there as it does down in the town proper. There are always clouds gathering around her house in tight-knit clusters, blocking the sunlight. She has grown accustomed to the darkness there, though in her heart she would much prefer to live down below and be free in the light, like the flowers that are her namesake. Those were her happiest times as a little girl, to play with her mother in the expansive gardens around her home, surrounded by the daisies and the cornflowers and the trees.

But she is a dutiful daughter, and this was her father’s request. He wishes her to remain there, nestled amidst the clouds and the darkness, safely hidden away from the world (and consequently, away from the light) like a princess in one of those fairy tales she was always told as bedtime stories. She tries to tell herself now that she is awaiting her prince, but again she is uncertain as to when that person will come and whether or not that person will truly be a prince. At one time, she actually entertains the ludicrous idea of that person climbing her hair up the tower, but while amusing, it is not terribly realistic. That person will ultimately have to come through the puzzle doors.

In the end, the power of her dreams and her imagination can only carry her so far. And she once again must force herself to take comfort in the darkness of the night, where she seems to be forever alone. In the darkness, no one can see her tears of sorrow, of loneliness, of fear as to what her future will bring. For those reasons, she has grown to embrace the perpetual night that has become her world, and take to heart the shadows that keep her from the sun. For now, she must be strong and endure.

That does not mean that she necessarily has to like her situation. There is a distinct difference between liking something and merely accepting it, and she does accept it. But she cannot stop herself from wishing that the one would come and put an end to her isolation in that lonely place where the shadows overtake the sun.

Flora Reinhold favors the darkness. She really has no choice in the matter.

But nevertheless, she is eagerly awaiting the one who she sincerely believes will come for her someday, in fulfillment of her father’s predictions, her father’s wishes, and her father’s will. The one who is to become her guardian and possessor of the vast Reinhold fortune.

The one who she hopes desperately will bring her back into the light.
